The Cost of Pissing in Berlin

For a major European city, Berlin offers surprisingly cheap, but very good, food. I’m talking about sitting in a restaurant and not in any one of your familiar fast food joints. At the Good Morning Vietnam restaurant (Alte Schönhauser Straße 60), for instance, I paid just €13 for a bowl of noodles with beef and vegies, a couple of spring rolls and a glass of mango lasi.

However, you can forget about pissing in Berlin! It’s expensive. Well, OK, €0.80 doesn’t seem like a lot, but when you consider this cost relative to the act itself – that strikes me as way too steep. And that’s just for taking a piss; it’s almost double for that other business. Also, the only places that seem to charge this fee are the “water closets” where you’ll find an attendant, who basically cleans the place, and these are mostly in train stations. So my tip is to look for the Big McD golden arches and use the toilets there. You could also do what I’ve noticed some locals do: enter the nearest restaurant and casually ask for their toilets.
